You Win Some You Lose Some: A Self-Assessment on Class 207

After spending 5 ish months taking this course it is finally time for me to write my reflective essay. Coming into this class I wondered what “Writing for Engineering” really meant. I’m glad to say that I figured out (hint the writing part was far more important than the engineering part). This semester, we worked on many different assignments such as a letter of introduction, Lab Report analysis, technical description, and the proposal project. Throughout this essay I will talk about each assignment and how they helped me improve my writing skills.

The first assignment we were assigned was to create a resume and cover letter based on an internship related to our major. This assignment seemed pretty clear to me because I spent a lot of time in high school working on my resume. I never made a cover letter previous to this class so that was the tricky part of the assignment. However in the end it turned out to be pretty simple since there are so many templets available online. Getting feedback on my resume also helped me improve it for the long run.

The second assignment we worked on was the lab report. For this assignment we had to create a lab report based on the probability of dice rolls using a scholarly study. This assignment was somewhat difficult. Mainly because I made we more complicated than it should’ve been by trying to do extensive research that wasn’t needed/helpful in the end (at least I know how to research topics now haha). I expected the grade I got since I rushed creating the actual report. I didn’t know what kind of image would be good enough for it. I also forgot to put my name on the document and ended it up scribbling it on the front of the Lab report which was unprofessional. Overall the assignment itself helped refresh my memory on probability and analyzing data.

The third assignment was the most time consuming and complicated one of them all! This assignment was a group project. We had to create a proposal for a new student center. In the beginning I was really excited about the project because me and my teammates had creative freedom to add whatever we liked to our student center (SC). However, as time went on it became difficult pin-point exactly what awe wanted our SC to be like. Like the lab report I also overcomplicated this project but thankfully I had my teammates to make me realize that it wasn’t really that serious. In the sense that I didn’t need to worry too much since this was all just make believe anyways. When it came time for me and my team to present we were super nervous but in the end it got done and we were super proud of the final outcome. This assignment taught we what works and doesn’t work when doing group projects. I was super grateful to have teammates who actually put in the work and didn’t make me do everything by myself.

*Dun dun dun* the last major assignment was the technical description. For this assignment we had to research a topic related to our major and create a poster to present to the class (science fair style). This assignment seemed relatively straightforward to me because I had done something similar in my AP computer science class during my senior year. Since my major is computer science I decided to pick “Deep Fakes” as my topic and I had a fun time researching this topic. Even though the topic is pretty dark it was interesting to present. Due to protest happing on campus we ended up having to do the presentations online which I didn’t mind. Besides the technical difficulties I faced which trying to present, it went pretty well.

In between all this major assignments we also had class lessons that prepared us for the Quest, which was our “final”. Not only did the lessons help us prepare for the “final” but they also helped us brush up on grammar and punctuation skills. Which was much needed for me. I like how Mr. B simplified everything so it wasn’t complicated to understand. This is one of things I hope to continue working on throughout my college career.

In the end this class taught me skills I’ll use in the real world. It’s never too late to work on my writing skills because it can always get better. Shoutout to Mr. B for making the class fun since day one!
